Introduction

In the works of Chen Zifeng, a muscular and powerful “giant” frequently appears, gender-ambiguous, with a youthful face but an adult’s robust physique. Their form is inspired by astronauts or cartoon characters like Ultraman and Sun Wukong. To some extent, these are self-portraits of Chen Zifeng. These fairy tale superheroes, once the dreams of a young boy, lighting up his childhood, are now endowed with incredible power through the grown man’s artistic expression.

In terms of composition, Chen Zifeng employs a “full-frame” approach. He fills the canvas with lines and colours, leaving only sporadic blank spaces, allowing the artwork to have a sense of “breathability.

An outstanding contemporary artist, graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts and serves as an Associate Professor and Master’s Supervisor at the College of Art and Design, Beijing Forestry University. His work, deeply influenced by the visual experiences of those born in the 1980s, combines nostalgia and a vision of the future, creating a unique visual language. Chen Zifeng’s art explores profound themes such as growth, love and death, desire and loss while challenging traditional ink painting to find a place for the visual experiences of the 1980s generation in contemporary art​​​​​​.

His works demonstrate a deep understanding and unique expression of Eastern and Western cultures, reflecting the relationship between tradition and modernity, East and West, inheritance and innovation.
